Reed & Barton Bowl - Sterling?

We purchased a Reed & Barton bowl at auction about a week ago. The bowl was stated to be sterling by the auctioneer. After purchasing the bowl, we found that it is only marked "Reed & Barton 1204". There is no reference to sterling, silverplate, or epns. Is it possible to determine if this bowl is sterling? I believe that if the bowl is not sterling, it was an honest mistake by the auctioneer and we're quite sure we can return it for a refund.
